The SHAPE-EU project final event celebrates the project achievements

SHAPE-EU final event

The final event of the European Affordable Housing consortium (SHAPE-EU) project took place on 21 February at the Committee of the Regions. It addressed EU policymakers and all the key stakeholders of the Local Industrial Partnership represented in the project consortium (local authorities, social, public and cooperative housing providers, and SMEs).

Commissioner Kadri Simson gave a welcome speech (via video message).

The event presented the main achievements of the project:

  • 3 Blueprints with tried and tested approaches which will answer the question on how to plan and implement innovative renovations that leave no one behind;
  • 22 Supported districts from different corners of Europe that received tailored support for their renovation project from experienced mentors;
  • Give recognition to those who went the extra mile to support the social and affordable housing providers, SMEs, or cities that were looking for answers to how renovation can be inclusive and exemplary;
  • 13 Mentors helped local actors improve their renovation projects in one-to-one sessions;
  • A Funding Simulator that provides a snapshot of existing public and private finance that can be used for renovation projects at district level.

STUDY VISIT

The final event was followed by a study visit, hosted by The Housing Company of the Brussels-Capital Region (SLRB) to renovation projects of social housing in Brussels.

A group of social and affordable housing providers, cities, SMEs, and fellow housing experts witnessed firsthand the ambitious initiatives of SLRB – a member of Housing Europe – which is converting a longstanding industrial building in Brussels into 63 modern, energy-efficient social housing apartments and adding 5 stores further up to a tower to accommodate housing needs.

The SHAPE-EU project

The European Affordable Housing Consortium is the point of reference for a socially-inclusive Renovation Wave and New European Bauhaus.

As of March 2022, 10 partners have joined efforts under the European Affordable Housing consortium (SHAPE-EU) project to shape the Renovation Wave for the Social and Affordable Housing Sector.

The partnership has developed blueprints for a just energy transition with affordability and liveability at its heart. Coordinated by Housing Europe and co-funded by the European Union’s Single Market Programme, the goal of the project is to support public, social and cooperative housing providers, public authorities, and SMEs to deliver social and affordable housing district renovations, which include innovative features, such as the use of smart and circular technologies and new approaches created and managed jointly with the local communities.
